AlphaLab Alumni Updates

Things have been a bit hectic lately.

Aside from preparing for AlphaLab’s Demo Day, we are in the midst of selecting our 7th cycle of companies. While it has always been difficult to decide on which companies to take, this year it has been even more so, as we received the highest quantity and quality of apps since AlphaLab opened in 2008–definitely a good problem to have and just one of the great indicators of Pittsburgh’s blossoming entrepreneurial scene.

Today our SouthSide space is eerily quiet, as four out of the six companies located here are in Detroit participating in Funded by Night. Delirium, Tutor Technologies, Wawadoo, and NoWait are all among the small group of companies that were selected to pitch for a chance to win the $100k convertible note that will be given away at the end of the night.

Since you’ll be hearing all about our current cycle of companies soon enough at Demo Day, I thought now would be a good time to update you on what some of our alumni have been doing.

All About ShowClix

Recently, Innovation Works portfolio company ShowClix has been in the news quite a bit. First, founder Josh Dziabiak was named by Inc. Magazine as one of the top “30 Under 30 Entrepreneurs” for 2010. Here’s the brief video posted by Inc.:

Not long after, local Pittsburgh station KDKA did a story that not only features Josh and fellow founder Lynsie Camuso, but also the legendary cereal wall.

Most recently, Lynsie was interviewed by Mixergy and tells the ShowClix story and how it came to be the company it is today.

Congrats ShowClix on all the recent buzz!

ModCloth Raises $19.8 Million

Congratulations go out to our friends at ModCloth, who have secured the biggest raise in the Pittsburgh area so far in 2010 for the amount of $19.8 million.

CEO Eric Koger has spoken to AlphaLab participants on several occasions: sharing his experiences in starting the company as well as technical and business strategies that helped make them a leading online clothing destination.

You can find more information about the investment as well as Eric’s comments in the Pittsburgh Business Times article online.

ModCloth is an Innovation Works portfolio company and arguably the fastest growing startup in Pittsburgh – increasing its headcount by five times in two years to 138. The company sells retro and vintage clothing from independent designers.

Congratulations again to Eric, Susan, and the entire ModCloth team!

Innovation Works’ Portfolio Company Showclix Closes on Series A Investment!

Congrats to Showclix - an online ticketing solution for event organizers – for closing on a round of funding from Pittsburgh Equity Partners! They were featured in this Techcrunch article discussing the funding round.  We look forward to seeing how Showclix grows as a result of this funding and are just very happy for Josh and Lynsie (Showclix’s cofounders in the photo above) for this accomplishment!

Congratulations to Shanna Tellerman of Sim Ops Studios!

Shanna Tellerman in BusinessWeek Magazine

Shanna Tellerman – CEO of Innovation Works’ Portfolio Company Sim Ops Studios – was featured in a recent BusinessWeek article and was named one of the best young tech entrepreneurs by BusinessWeek Magazine.  This is quite an accomplishment and we at AlphaLab would like to congratulate her.

Sim Ops Studios is the creator of a really fun consumer and enterprise product called Wild Pockets, which I personally became addicted to when it launched.  Wild Pockets is a software service that lets you create just about anything you can imagine using 3D content.  I highly recommend playing it!
