AlphaLab Alumni Updates

Things have been a bit hectic lately.

Aside from preparing for AlphaLab’s Demo Day, we are in the midst of selecting our 7th cycle of companies. While it has always been difficult to decide on which companies to take, this year it has been even more so, as we received the highest quantity and quality of apps since AlphaLab opened in 2008–definitely a good problem to have and just one of the great indicators of Pittsburgh’s blossoming entrepreneurial scene.

Today our SouthSide space is eerily quiet, as four out of the six companies located here are in Detroit participating in Funded by Night. Delirium, Tutor Technologies, Wawadoo, and NoWait are all among the small group of companies that were selected to pitch for a chance to win the $100k convertible note that will be given away at the end of the night.

Since you’ll be hearing all about our current cycle of companies soon enough at Demo Day, I thought now would be a good time to update you on what some of our alumni have been doing.

AlphaLaw Program to help AlphaLab companies with legal costs and considerations

This spring Pittsburgh law firm Cohen & Grigsby will be launching its AlphaLaw Program, an exclusive deal with Innovation Works (AlphaLab’s parent organization) that will empower Pittsburgh-area tech startups to “launch and prepare for rapid growth without incurring many of the associated costs.”

AlphaLab companies participating in the program will be eligible to receive complimentary legal services and documents (e.g. certificate of incorporation, restricted stock purchase agreement, stockholders agreement, proprietary rights agreement) from the firm, and have the option of working with C & G at favorable rates post-AlphaLab.

AlphaLab is excited to partner with such an esteemed firm and we look forward to the benefits this program will be able to provide both our companies, and the Pittsburgh region as a whole.

Shoefitr wins “Most Likely to Be Acquired” at LAUNCH conference

Congrats to Shoefitr for winning “Most Likely to Be Acquired” during yesterday’s LAUNCH conference!

LAUNCH is a newsletter and conference focused on startups and the VCs and angel investors who fund them. Last July Shoefitr scored a free table on the conference’s expo floor after taking 1st place in the Global TWiST (This Week in Startups) competition. Since then, they’ve landed a major deal with Running Warehouse and apparently impressed someone at LAUNCH because they were pulled from the pit and invited to take stage and pitch to a roomful of investors.

Congrats again to Matt Wilkinson, Nick End and Breck Fresen! We’re so proud of all you have accomplished since AlphaLab’s 4th Demo Day!

You can see Nick demo the product here.

More than just a coffee buzz at AlphaLab…

Thanks to all who stopped by our space last Friday to help make our most recent Open Coffee Club a huge success! So many people showed up to our offices that we ended up running out of coffee halfway through the event–a true hallmark of success for any networking event! It’s amazing to think about how big this event has been able to grow organically–from the first event when fewer than 10 of us gathered in a Sewickley coffee house, to last Friday’s turnout of over 90 people. Much thanks to the help of Meakem Becker’s Aaron Tainter and Alan Veeck and CloudFab’s Nick Pinkston for helping make this happen.

For those of you who weren’t able to make it out to the event, or if you didn’t get the chance to meet all our current companies, check out Deb Smit’s recent article in POPCity: Wawadoo? AlphaLab unveils next class of software startups

Also, be sure to join the Open Coffee Club – Pittsburgh Facebook group to find out when the next event will be held.

(And don’t worry, we’ll be sure to double our next order of coffee.)

Cycle 6 Updates + Open Coffee Club this Friday

Since our sixth cycle of companies began our program in January, they have been involved in a whirlwind of activity.

In between feverishly developing their products, market strategies (and basketball skills), they’ve received some advice from our previous cycle of companies; participated in an investor pitch workshop hosted by IW’s Frank Demmler and Terri Glueck; learned the importance of “shipping fast and often” from ReadWriteWeb’s Sean Ammirati; took part in a roundtable discussion on accounting considerations for startups with Sisterson & Co; sat in on a BlueTree Allied Angel Screening Meeting; and heard some valuable advice (and entertaining anecdotes) from Don Charlton, Cycle 2 alum and Founder/CEO of The Resumator.

And this Friday, you’ll get your chance to meet with AlphaLab’s current cycle of companies at Open Coffee Club Pittsburgh. Organized by Meakem Becker and open to the public, this event is an informal opportunity to network with fellow entrepreneurs, developers, investors, and designers in the area.

If you’re free in the morning, we’d love for you to stop by!

Event Details:
Friday, February 11
9-11 am
AlphaLab (2325 East Carson Street, Pittsburgh, PA 15203)

AlphaLab joins TechStars Network

AlphaLab is excited to announce it is now a charter member of the TechStars Network!

TechStars, the prominent mentorship-driven seed-stage investment program out of Boulder, launched this network earlier this morning as part of the Startup America initiative, a White House campaign to celebrate, inspire, and accelerate high-growth entrepreneurship throughout the nation.

The TechStars Network was created to provide professional development, networking opportunities, training, and ongoing support for its members. It currently consists of AlphaLab and 16 other “independently owned and operated regional organizations” that operate accelerator programs similar to TechStars.

We are very excited to be part of this regionally diverse network of accelerators and look forward to the increased opportunities it will provide for our companies.

We invite you to browse the network’s 16 other launch partners or read David Cohen’s announcement of the network.

Alumni Offer Advice to Newest AlphaLab Companies

Last week our newest (and sixth) cycle of companies began AlphaLab’s intensive accelerator program. To give the new guys a better idea of what they could expect in the weeks to come, we asked alumni from the fifth cycle to come in and share any advice or wisdom they had gleaned from their experience.

Here were some of the insights offered by Devotee’s Matt French, Levlr’s Phil Anderson and Shawn Wall, Careerimp’s Mona Abdel-Halim, NoWait’s Robb Myer and OfferMint’s Vyom Bhuta:

1. Launch Quickly. This is often the first piece of advice alumni offer up–and for good reason. Both a pillar of the lean startup model and adopted maxim of many startups, “shipping fast, and often” allows companies to test out market assumptions and use valuable user feedback to quickly pivot their product or service to fit the needs of their customers.

2. Learn How to Say “No.” This refers both to taking on potential customers that will cause you more problems than you can handle, and the laundry list of features your customers will inevitably want you to add. In the latter case, 37 signals suggests to listen, but warns against any immediate action as,

Each time you say yes to a feature, you’re adopting a child. You have to take your baby through a whole chain of events (e.g. design, implementation, testing, etc.). And once that feature’s out there, you’re stuck with it. Just try to take a released feature away from customers and see how pissed off they get.

3. Make it easy for any news outlet, blogger or reporter to cover your story. After many failed attempts of trying to get their Beerby app covered on major tech blogs, Phil uncovered the secret behind getting published: write the story for them. Levlr’s CEO and Co-founder added, “Who could do a better job covering your story than you?” Vyom also pointed out that including links to any articles or blog posts written about your company in pitch emails was a great way to establish legitimacy and give potential customers or investors an easy way to learn more about what you’re offering, without adding unnecessary bloat.

4. Don’t be afraid to cold call…but be smart about it. Careerimp found that reaching out to new prospects became easier once they obtained a positive testimonial from a colleague inside the tightly knit industry they were targeting. And after Luke from NoWait realized he wouldn’t get too far by simply asking a restaurant’s hostess for the owner or manager, he got creative. If his company was interested in obtaining a restaurant’s business and couldn’t find the owner’s name online, he’d go to the restaurant, have a beer, and ask a server for the owner or manager’s name so he could call on them the next day.

5. Always be aware of the value you can provide to a customer (ideally in financial terms). Mona also mindfully pointed out that this often should be in terms of the payer–not the user.

The last advice offered by the alums? Ironically enough, be sure and qualify the advice you’re given.

We wish our newest cycle of companies the best of luck and look forward to updating you on their progress through the AlphaLab blog.

AlphaLab company Shoefitr wins global pitch competition!

Last week, members of the Pittsburgh startup community gathered at AlphaLab to participate in This Week in Startup’s second international pitch contest. Several pitches were presented before the actual show’s start at 2:00 PM Eastern, and Shoefitr was selected as the Pittsburgh representative.

At the end of the show Jason and Lon selected Shoefitr as the winner of the pitch contest! Here’s their pitch:

Congratulations Shoefitr on a great pitch and special thanks to John Ganotis from Deviceknit for organizing the event!

Spring 2010 AlphaLab Demo Day in Pictures

This week we welcome the next class of passionate entrepreneurs to AlphaLab for the start of the next session of our program. With that in mind, we take a look back at the most recent Demo Day with a few pictures of the event.

AlphaLab’s Demo Day is the opportunity for our “graduating” AlphaLab companies to present to an audience of investors, potential partners, and other key individuals from across the country. Attendance was standing-room only and the companies all did a great job with their presentations, continuing to raise the bar for the next AlphaLab class.

Innovation Works President and CEO Rich Lunak welcomes the audience with some opening remarks.
